Marine Vessel Painter


We are seeking full-time, year-round Marine Vessel Painters. The primary responsibility of a Marine Painter is to apply protective coatings to marine vessels and structures. Candidates must be skilled in sandblasting, spraying, or hand-painting for both repair work and fabrication tasks. This position requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of various coating systems (including anti-fouling), and the ability to work safely in potentially challenging outdoor environments. Painters will work on marine railways and aboard steel vessels ranging from 50 to 200 feet in length, excluding yachts, fiberglass, or wooden vessels. Additionally, work may occur inside vessels, possibly in tight quarters or within workshops. The role may involve using various lifting equipment (training will be provided) and wearing respiratory protective equipment. Marine Painters will also participate in all aspects of the marine railway operations, including blocking, hauling, mooring, and launching vessels, as well as general shipyard cleanup and maintenance duties. Strict adherence to environmental and safety procedures is essential.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Surface Preparation: Removing rust, grime, old paint, and contaminants from steel, wood, and fiberglass surfaces using methods like scraping, power tool cleaning, and solvent wiping. 
  • Surface Restoration: Filling cracks and holes, sanding, and creating a smooth surface for proper paint adhesion. 
  • Coating Application: Applying various marine-grade paints and protective coatings using brushes, rollers, or spray equipment according to job specifications and environmental safety standards. 
  • Material Management: Mixing, matching, and handling paints, solvents, and other finishing materials. 
  • Equipment Maintenance: Cleaning and maintaining painting tools and equipment. 
  • Safety and Environment: Following strict safety protocols and environmental procedures, ensuring proper disposal of waste and handling of hazardous materials. 
  • Quality Control: Adhering to specified thickness standards and recording application process data. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Technical Skills: Proficient in surface preparation techniques and the application of different painting tools and equipment. 
  • Knowledge of Marine Coatings: Understanding of specialized products like anti-fouling paints, epoxy coatings, and their specific application requirements. 
  • Attention to Detail: An eye for detail to ensure a high-quality, smooth finish. 
  • Physical Stamina: The ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions. 
  • Teamwork: Ability to follow instructions and work effectively with supervisors and other team members.
